FireSat has been selected as one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2025 in the Aerospace category. The satellite system, developed through collaboration between Muon Space and Earth Fire Alliance, joins other notable aerospace innovations including Firefly’s Blue Ghost lunar lander and the Vera C. Rubin Observatory.
The FireSat Protoflight launched in March 2025 and has successfully validated the satellite’s advanced multispectral electro-optical/infrared payload and data delivery systems. Notably, the system detected a small roadside fire in Oregon that existing space-based systems had missed, demonstrating superior sensitivity for early-stage fire detection.
Operational Progress
Earth Fire Alliance is collaborating with nine fire agencies across three continents through its Early Adopter Program to refine data products. The first three operational FireSat satellites are scheduled to launch in 2026, with plans for a full constellation of 50+ satellites by 2030.
Once fully operational, the constellation will monitor every point on Earth every 20 minutes or less, providing near real-time wildfire detection and tracking capabilities globally.
