Muon Space received a $44.6 million SBIR Phase III Other Transaction Authority agreement from the United States Space Force to demonstrate a dual-use environmental monitoring constellation. The award represents one of the largest SBIR Phase III contracts in the space sector.
The program will deploy multiple satellites carrying Muon’s advanced multispectral EO/IR instruments, serving both Department of Defense weather monitoring requirements and commercial wildfire detection through the FireSat program.
Gregory Smirin, President of Muon Space, emphasized the dual-use nature of the technology, noting that the same instruments that detect wildfires can characterize cloud formations for military weather forecasting.
